iLO Repository update vs online update through OS

For online firmware and software updates on Gen10 servers, you can use SUM through the server operating system or through the iLO and the iLO Repository.

The following are the advantages of using the two methods:
  • iLO Repository update

    • Does not add to production network traffic.

    • Can stage in advance, install during maintenance window.

    • Includes install set creation for future rollback.

  • Online update through OS

    • Unlike iLO Repository update, online updates through the operating system do not need iSUT installed to ensure all drivers and some firmware components are installed.

NOTE:

You can also perform an offline upgrade using either the USB key utility or iLO virtual media. This upgrade method does not require the server operating system and is useful for provisioning.
